The 10 Things You Need to Know about BluePay’s Mobile EMV Processing Solution

What is Mobile EMV Processing?

BluePay now offers an integrated processing solution for card-present EMV and swipe transactions from within a mobile or mobile-web application running on a smartphone or tablet device. The solution is available for either the iOS or Android operating systems and is designed to take the heavy lifting out of handling EMV and swipe transactions by communicating directly with the BluePay Payment Gateway. Card-present EMV transactions use an EMV/Swipe device that has been specifically certified for use with the Mobile EMV Processing solution.

What type of merchants can benefit from using the BluePay Mobile EMV Processing solution?

Any BluePay partner or merchant who requires the ability to accept a card-present EMV or swipe transaction on a smartphone or tablet device will benefit by using the BluePay Mobile EMV Processing solution. Think of this as a secure hosted payment form for a mobile or mobile-web application. The solution is designed to interface directly with existing applications through an API layer built in to the BluePay Mobile EMV application. The solution does not currently support PIN-based or contactless (NFC) transactions.

What are the requirements for using the Mobile EMV Processing solution?

In order to use Mobile EMV Processing, a merchant must be enrolled in either the Professional or the Enterprise Payment Processing package on the BluePay Payment Gateway and must purchase at least one ID Tech VP3300 Bluetooth card reader from BluePay. The merchant must also download and install the BluePay Mobile Processing App from either the Apple App Store (for IOS devices) or the Google Play Store (for Android devices).

How does Mobile EMV Processing work?

Partners or merchants typically access the BluePay Mobile Processing App from a companion mobile or mobile-web application that is integrated to the BluePay Mobile Processing App. This integration is accomplished by using an API interface layer built into the mobile application. The API layer allows the calling application to pass data such as customer information, billing address, invoice number, and transaction amount to the application so it does not need to be re-entered by the merchant. Once a transaction is initiated and the required data is passed to the BluePay Mobile Processing App, the merchant simply taps on the “PROCESS CHARGE” button to activate the card reader and then inserts or swipes the credit card. The BluePay Mobile Processing App then collects the encrypted EMV or swipe data and automatically sends it to the BluePay Payment Gateway for processing. If approved, an electronic receipt is displayed and the customer can add a signature using a fingertip or stylus. Transaction details can later be reviewed directly within the BluePay Payment Gateway.

If I already use a BluePay Hosted Payment Form with my existing mobile application, how do I upgrade to the Mobile EMV Processing solution?

If you already use an existing hosted payment form, whether it be hosted by BluePay or internally on your own secure web server, then you will need to replace the hosted payment form with the BluePay Mobile Processing App. A native hosted payment form, or any mobile web page, does not have the ability to directly communicate with the EMV/swipe card reader without using a manufacturer provided SDK. By using the BluePay Mobile Processing App, in place of the hosted payment form, you can add the ability to communicate with the EMV/swipe card reader, which has all of the manufacturer provided SDK capabilities built in already. Data is passed to and from the BluePay Mobile Processing App in a fashion that is similar to the way data is passed to and from an existing hosted payment form.

How do I integrate my existing mobile application with the BluePay Mobile Processing App?

The BluePay Mobile Processing App has a built in API interface layer used to pass data in and out of the application. When activating the application, a data string containing the information to be shared between your existing mobile application and the BluePay application will be registered in an industry standard URI scheme used for sharing data in mobile environments. The input data set will specify the URI scheme to be used when sending the response data back once the transaction is processed.

What if an EMV chip transaction fails?

Occasionally you will encounter an EMV chip card where the chip does not work and cannot be accessed by the card reader device. In this case, the card must be processed as a swipe transaction. When you process a chip-enabled card as a swipe transaction, it is called an EMV fallback transaction. When indicating that the transaction is an EMV Fallback transaction, the Issuing Bank, and not the merchant, will remain responsible for a fraudulent transaction, just as if the merchant was using an EMV chip reader device.

Are there special requirements for EMV transaction receipts?

EMVCo, the governing body that exists to facilitate worldwide interoperability and acceptance of secure payment transactions, along with the individual card brands, have set forth a series of requirements related to the printing of receipt data for EMV enabled transactions. It is recommended that the option to automatically send an EMV compliant email receipt to the customer be enabled in the BluePay Mobile Processing App.

What EMV card reader devices work with the Mobile EMV Processing solution?

The BluePay Mobile EMV Processing solution is initially available only for the ID Tech VP3300 Bluetooth-enabled EMV device. This device can accept both EMV or swipe transactions and can be purchased directly from BluePay. Contactless (NFC) transactions are not available in the initial product release. Because this device includes a BluePay-specific encryption key, a similar device purchased from a source other than BluePay will not work for any of the BluePay Mobile EMV processing options.

How much does the Mobile EMV Processing solution cost?

In order to use the Mobile EMV Processing solution, a merchant must be enrolled in the BluePay Professional or Enterprise Payment Processing package on the BluePay Payment Gateway. The BluePay Mobile Processing App is publically available for free download on either the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. The ID Tech VP3300 Bluetooth EMV/Swipe device is available directly from BluePay for a price of $99 each. These devices are injected with a proprietary BluePay encryption key that only works with the BluePay Payment Gateway.
