What are the Differences Between Levels 1, 2 and 3 Processing for your Business?

There are many different types of business, corporate and purchasing cards issued by the major card brands. In general, the more information you include on a transaction, the lower your interchange cost will be. The type of card your business customers choose to present for payment will determine the lowest interchange level available for that transaction. See below for explanations on the different levels.

Level 1 Processing

Level 1 processing typically applies to business-to-consumer (B2C) transactions in which consumers use personal credit cards to make purchases. The only data required for Level 1 is the merchant name, transaction amount and date.

Level 2 Processing

Level 2 is usually reserved for B2B clients. The primary benefit of Level 2 processing is control. Corporations can monitor and control corporate and employee spending by assigning project codes, limiting the type of purchases and setting predefined limits on spending. For example, a company might wish to restrict the number of transactions per card per month, the amount of each transaction or where the card is being used. In addition to the information required for Level 1 processing, Level 2 requires the tax amount, customer code, merchant postal code, tax identification, merchant minority code and merchant state code. This added information provides your business clientele with more accurate transaction reports, improving customer service.

What Is Level 3 Processing?

Level 3 offers even more detailed reporting for cardholders and lower processing fees for the merchant. Level 3 transactions are most often made with government or corporate purchasing cards. Businesses and government agencies use Level 3 cards to take advantage of the enhanced reporting and greater control over employee purchases. In addition to Level 2 data, Level 3 processing requires line item details such as freight amount, item description, item quantity and unit of measure, destination country code and more. Level 3 processing requires specialized software. Merchants accepting Level 3 transactions typically integrate their payments software into ERP or business management systems.
