How It Works

How Credit Card Processing Works

If you’re new to the world of credit card processing you may be wondering how it all works. The process seems complex, but happens in just a few seconds. Take a minute to see how it all works and then get started with BluePay Go!

The Process

1. Customer makes a purchase
Customer uses a credit card for payment either face-to-face, online, by phone, fax or mail.

2. Merchant enters a transaction
The merchant submits the credit card transaction by swiping or entering the card and transaction information. For e-commerce merchants, the cardholder keys in their payment option, and the merchant simply has to ship the product.

3. Processor transmits the data
The terminal, POS system, or gateway connects to the processing network for the approvals.

4. Credit Card Issuer approves or declines the transaction
The credit card issuer either approves or declines the transaction based on validity of the card and transaction and available funds.

5. Response is sent back
If approved, an authorization response is sent to the Processor (BluePay Go!) and the Merchant.

6. Transaction is completed
The Merchant completes the transaction.

7. Merchant submits a batch closure
At the end of the day, the merchant completes the process with a batch closure to close out the transactions processed that day. The Processor’s (BluePay Go!) acquiring bank collects the funds from the Credit Card Issuers.

8. Funds are deposited into the Merchant’s Bank
Typically within 48 hours, the Processor’s (BluePay Go!) acquiring bank deposits the funds into the Merchant’s business account.
